Journalists tend to want to hug anyone who makes a case for saying that their work is rather more than a first rough draft of history, but I think I'll pass on Nicholson Baker. The wilfully eccentric American novelist devoted an entire book to demonising librarians for throwing out old newspapers, while Monica Lewinsky famously gave Vox, his novel about phone sex, to a serving US president. .
